Day 18 – Home

Today was a long travel day. I’m looking forward to being home, and eating Mexican food. I was sad to leave though – it has been an incredible adventure, and I’m so glad I did it.

6 Countries (Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Poland and Germany). I went about 1,300 miles – which is the same distance as it is from Tampa, FL to Madison, WI.

I had a 9 hour flight from Berlin to JFK. My original flight back to Minneapolis was cancelled weeks ago, and they automatically rebooked me on a new connection…which included a 6 hour layover, so that wasn’t awesome. Then a 3 1/2 hour flight home, which is almost over. Storms in New York and Minneapolis both had me really thinking i shouldn’t have left Berlin, but I’m getting home tonight after all (And I’m staying awake, to sleep tonight – which means I’ll have been awake for about 24 hours). Only about an hour delay in the end.

So grateful for the time away from work, Stu’s encouragement for me to get active in ULI a few years ago, and the incredibly patient Delta agents who helped me change my flights to make this a reality. The more I travel – the more I see, and learn, and experience – the more I love to travel. Someone on this trip talked about the wanderlust gene, and maybe I have that. Someone else said they couldn’t stop traveling until they found their “place” – a place that just fit them so perfectly, they could stop searching. Maybe I just haven’t found my place yet. Or maybe I just know there is so much out there to learn, and I’ll never stop exploring, no matter how much my brother and mother wish i would just stay home. 🙂

Thank you for joining me on this journey.

Group Dinner, with some of the closest friends I made. And Kurt.
This is the symbol on the stop lights in East Berlin
Those are bird houses – they call it “Animal Aided Design” – it focuses on making sure native birds and animals aren’t displaced
It is common throughout this region to see window blinds on the OUTSIDE of buildings
Even the protests are well organized
So distracted by the finger that I didn’t even initially notice the gummy bear flavored push up??
He’s watching, always.
I live by Canada. And I have never before seen a Canadian Steakhouse.
Grateful for the images, otherwise I would have been going into the wrong bathroom all along
Europeans are so wise
Old movie posters
The technique they used in the stucco makes it look 3D (it isn’t) in Prague
Beneath the upper windows, you can see spikes. A lot of homes have them throughout Eastern Europe – the idea is that it breaks the snow up, so it doesn’t slide off the roof in a large chunk.
A bathroom door lock
Little sculptures were “hidden” all over Budapest
You have to get a barcode for your banana. Apparently they don’t know the code is 4011.
Just off of the bridge – they’ve tried to encourage people to put their locks in other places, because the weight was impacting structures
And sometimes, your pants just match the building you’re touring, and your friends are very excited for you.
